Far below the spinning helicopter blades, it’s gridlock on the motorway out of Auckland. The chopper flies high above the traffic, turning a ninety-minute high-speed drive to the meeting point at the rugby field into a fifteen-minute flight. Stan urges the pilot to make it ten. In the front seat of the chopper, Jaye is in radio contact with the armed offenders squad. Making sure there will be weapons for each of the criminal investigation branch detectives. There’s no thought now of the consequences of Hana being involved in an armed operation while she is suspended. Only one thing matters. Getting to Poata Raki and taking him into custody before he can kill again.

The pilot banks away from the motorway, towards where Auckland’s suburbs hit the farmland areas in the south of the city. The radio crackles again, the squad leader reporting back.

‘We’ve got two snipers positioned on a ridge overlooking the house. High-powered binoculars. They’re seeing movement in one room of the house,’ he says.
